Biography: An account of a person's life

In this lesson we will examine biographies of individuals involved in the Civil War. The lives of these individuals are rich in experience, courage, and challenge. Your job will be to examine at least five Civil War biographies and report your findings in a journal. In line with the newspaper motif of English 3, you will provide a written report of some very fascinating characters from the Civil War.

As you read about the lives of these individuals, think and write about:

  • Who - name and family information

  • What - role in the Civil War

  • When - What years did he or she serve?

  • Where - Where is he or she from? Where did he or she serve?

  • Why - What makes this person interesting to study? What unique and/or interesting characteristics make him or her interesting?

In your tour of some of the key figures of the civil war, be sure to check out these five required biographies, and then read several biographies of your choice:

  • Clara Barton

  • Pierre Beauregard

  • Ulysses S. Grant

  • Robert E. Lee

  • William T. Sherman
