Reading Rubric

 

Level Accuracy Expression Rate

Level One

Student correctly pronounces 25 words or lower.

Student demonstrates no inflection in reading (i.e. voice raising/lowering). Student reads one word at a time.
Level Two Student correctly pronounces 50 words or lower.

Student demonstrates some inflection (i.e. simple sentences).

Student reads familiar clumps of words, but reverts to ‘one word’ reading with unfamiliar text.

Level Three Student correctly pronounces 75 words or lower.

Student demonstrates inflection (i.e. raising of voice to indicate question, lowering of voice to indicate complete thought).

Student reads complete thoughts, noting pauses as indicated by end of sentence punctuation.

Level Four Student correctly pronounces 100 words or lower.

Student demonstrates exceptional inflection (i.e. appropriate raising/lowering of voice to indicate both questions and statements, uses appropriate vocal intonations to demonstrate author’s purpose and meaning).

Student reads in complete thoughts, noting pauses as indicated by punctuation, including:  commas, semi colons, dashes, parenthesis, and periods.
