Sinclair, Upton Beall


Upton Beall Sinclair 1878 - 1968
  • An American writer and social reformer

  • The Jungle published in 1906

  • The Jungle exposed the inhumane and absolute shocking working conditions of the Chicago meat packing industry.

  • In one scene, Sinclair even details a worker's finger being cut off in the meat packing plant. The finger is then packaged and eventually eaten.

  • The depiction of such atrocities by Sinclair eventually led to the formation of the The Pure Food and Drug Act.

  • Sinclair was considered a "muckraker."

  • Muckrake - to search out and publicly expose real or apparent misconduct of a prominent individual or business

  • His goal in writing The Jungle was to get employees to rebel against bosses and to force these bosses to make changes.

  • His goal was not necessarily met, but he did cause outrage and disgust. Citizens then forced the government to make strict laws regulating the meat-packing industry.

  • Sinclair was a forerunner in the new investigative journalism.
