The Virtual Times
Headline News

Your job as an investigative reporter:

Step one:
View and think

For this lesson, you will visit an online photo gallery titled "Images of the Civil War."
  • Spend between 5-10 minutes viewing each of the 11 sections of the photo gallery listed below.

  • Make notes as you view the sections.

    1. Portraits
    2. Groups of Soldiers
    3. Battlefields
    4. Camp and Quarters
    5. Band
    6. Maritime
    7. Field and Hospital Care
    8. Armaments
    9. Buildings
    10. Civilian Life
    11. Ruins

  • Your notes should include:

    • your reactions to the photos in general

    • your reactions to specific images

    • observations of specific things about or in the images

Now that you know what to do, access the "Images of the Civil War" gallery and begin your journey back to the time of the civil war.

Step two: Record your observations -- create a photo observation journal

In the form of a journal, provide your reactions to your careful viewing of these Civil War photographs.

  • Your photo reaction journal should follow this format:

    • From each section, select 1-2 photographs for your journal entries. You will create 15 total entries, with at least one entry from each section.

    • For each photo, provide a title, description, and at least two interesting aspects or details.

    • See an example.
