Geometry Glossary - D

Decagon:
a ten-sided polygon

Degree of a polynomial:
the degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of any one term

Diagonal:
a segment joining non-adjacent vertices of a polygon

Diameter:
the longest chord of a circle

Dihedral angles:
the angles formed by two intersecting planes

Distance:
the length of a segment with a distinct beginning and end; on a number line, it is the absolute value of the difference of the coordinates of the endpoints

image

in the coordinate plane, it is the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by connecting the endpoints (a, b) and (c, d) to either (a, d) or (c, b)

when discussing the distance between parallel lines (or planes), it is the length of the perpendicular segment with an endpoint on each line (plane)

Distance Formula:
[(x2-x1)2 +(y2-y1)2]/2

Domain:
the set of all input values of a function; also, the set of all the first coordinates of the ordered pairs of a relation

Draw:
to make a picture or likeness with pencil, pen, chalk, crayon or charcoal
