Framework for Understanding:

Dimension is defined as the parameters required to specify uniquely the points in a space.

There are many places where you can gather information about a concept like dimensions.

  • Dictionaries
  • Encyclopedias
  • Research Articles
  • Storybooks
  • Experiments

In this lesson, you will be researching what it means for something to be described as having 2-Dimensions, 3-Dimensions and beyond.  Below are links to resources that you are required to read.  When you are finished with this page, click on the Practice tab link and you will be given several questions to answer using the information that you have read.

  1. Read the first two paragraphs describing dimension in the Wikipedia Encyclopedia.
  2. In 1884, Edwin A. Abbott published a story book entitled Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions.  This book describes the life of a two-dimensional square.  Read a short summary of the book in the Imagining Other Dimensions article.  Read the introduction, the “From 2-D to 3-D” and the “From 3-D to 4-D” sections.  Be sure to click on the animation items on the right side of the article.
  3. Explore the Website, Edgar Muller-3D Street Art, to experience how artists use dimension in their work. View the video in the Ice Age link to watch process of creating these pieces of art.
  4. This last link will take you to an interactive experiment that allows you to create a hypercube, The Elegant Universe, Multidimensional Math. You will need to look under the heading “Slide Shows and Interactives” and choose Multidimensional Math.

If you wish to read more about Flatland on your own, click here.

Move on to the practice tab to answer some questions using the information that you gathered.

Be sure that you click on the assignment tab for this lesson. The questions that you need to answer for your instructor are located on the assignment tab.
