Part 1: Read the text of the lesson and take notes in your Geometry notebook.
Part 2: Go to the website provided in the practice section and practice measuring angles with a protractor.
Part 3: Complete the project described below. Be sure to read all directions before you get started. When you are finished, please submit your project to your instructor.
Design Your Dream Home
Buildings are used by everyone for a variety of reasons. They serve as homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, and much more. The building that is most familiar to each of us is our home. We all dream of having a home that is functional and beautiful. To create structures that are functional as well as models of architectural beauty, designers must apply principles of mathematics in their work. Scale drawings, commonly known as plans or blueprints, are used as patterns in the construction of buildings. An interesting aspect of working with blueprints is that you are working with three-dimensional objects such as rooms, doors, and windows in a two-dimensional workspace (review dimensions). Take a moment to think about the interior of your home and what it would look like on paper. Chances are you have a lot of rectangles bouncing around in your head right now. Think about all of the other three-dimensional objects in a home and what they might look like on a floor plan. What about the doors and windows? How do those look on the floor plan below? |

If you think the doors and windows look like segments, you are correct. What do you think the front of this house might look like? Now, your mind has to switch from looking at something two-dimensional to thinking about something three-dimensional.
In this assignment, you are going to look at some floor plans and design the front of the home for one of them. You will use your protractor and straightedge to create your design. As you work, think about all of the geometric terms that you have learned in this module. Make sure to include some of these in the front view of your home. (For instance, congruent segments form the window panes.)
Directions for the Project: Here are the steps that you must follow in order to complete this assignment. Be sure to read all the steps before you begin.
- Form an architectural committee, which will be made up of yourself and one or two friends or family members. Before starting, you will need to brief your committee on the terminology and tools needed to complete the project. This will include explaining the different vocabulary terms covered throughout this module and demonstrating how to effectively use a protractor.
- Select one of the floor plans from this link. Floor Plans
- You and your committee will need to collaborate on the features you want to include in the front of your home, and make sure that it matches the floor plan that you selected.
- Complete the project plan in this link. Project Plan This will help you organize your thoughts. Fill out the project plan, except for the conclusion, prior to starting your design. This plan must be submitted to your instructor along with your front view design.
- On an 8½ x 11 sheet of paper, draw a front view design that matches the floor plan you selected using only your straight edge and protractor. Explain the process you used to create the front view design of your house. In your opinion is your design a construction or a drawing? Why?
- After completing your design, please submit the completed Project Plan AND your design for the front of the home you selected to your instructor.
How to Submit Your Project: There are several ways that you can submit your project pages to your instructor.
- You may scan your work and submit it as an attached file. You would submit these in your assessment.
- You may take a digital picture of your work and submit it as an attached file. You would submit these in your assessment.
- If you need a different method of submission, please contact your instructor.
Regardless of how you are submitting your assignment, you must go to the assessments area of the course and submit your "1.11 How to Use a Protractor ” assignment page. If you have faxed, phoned or mailed in your work, please describe how you have submitted your assignment and include the date you sent your project or made your call to your instructor.
